DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Pinpoint Tests
NOTE: Do not run any of the following pinpoint tests unless so instructed by Pinpoint Test A (Quick Test). Doing so may produce incorrect results and services. After completing any pinpoint test service, return to Pinpoint Test A. Do not continue with other pinpoint tests.
CAUTION: Do not replace parts unless test results say they should be replaced.
NOTE: Keep the front door window glass (21410) rolled down during all pinpoint tests to avoid being locked out of the vehicle.
PINPOINT TEST A: QUICK TEST
A1 OPERATE LOCKS FROM DOOR SWITCHES
- For the door lock switch in each front door, front rear door rear and liftgate:
- LOCK and UNLOCK the doors several times using the door lock switch. Check that all the doors lock/unlock properly.
Do all doors lock/unlock properly from each door lock switch?
A2 CHECK BATTERY SAVER FEATURE
- Sit in vehicle with all doors closed.
- Key on, engine off.
- Turn interior lamps on with dimmer switch.
Do lamps illuminate?
A3 CHECK PROGRAM CONNECTOR
Do doors lock and unlock?
A4 LOCK DOORS USING TRANSMITTER
Does the system operate properly?
A5 UNLOCK DRIVER'S DOOR USING TRANSMITTER
- Key off.
- Program connector C4 NOT shorted.
- Doors closed and locked.
- Press the UNLOCK button on transmitter.
Does driver's door unlock and do interior lamps turn on when door is opened?
A6 UNLOCK PASSENGER DOOR(S) USING TRANSMITTER
- Press the UNLOCK button on transmitter twice (the second press must be within 5 seconds of the first) or if less than 5 seconds since Step A5, press the UNLOCK button on transmitter once.
- Key off.
- Program connector C4 NOT shorted.
Do door(s) and liftgate unlock?
A7 ACTIVATE THE PANIC ALARM USING TRANSMITTER
- Press the (red) PANIC button transmitter.
- Key off.
- Program connector C4 NOT shorted.
Does horn sound and do parking lamps flash on and off continuously?
A8 DEACTIVATE PANIC ALARM USING SAME TRANSMITTER
- If more than 3 minutes has elapsed since Step A7 (if the panic alarm has shut off), repeat Step A7.
- Key off.
- Program connector C4 NOT shorted
- Push the (red) PANIC button on the same transmitter that was used in Step A7.
Do horn and parking lamps shut off?
A9 TURN OFF PANIC ALARM WITH IGNITION ON
- Press the (red) PANIC button on any transmitter which has been programmed into the remote entry receiver module.
- Program connector C4 NOT shorted
- Then turn the ignition switch ON.
Do horn and do parking lamps shut off with ignition on?
A10 VERIFY DOOR LOCK USING TRANSMITTER
- Remove shorting plug from program connector C4.
- Key off.
- Close all doors. Doors should be unlocked.
- Press the LOCK button on the transmitter twice (the second press must be within 5 seconds of the first).
Does horn sound and do parking lamps flash?
A11 NO TRANSMISSION RECEIVED WITH IGNITION ON
- Key to RUN.
- All doors, closed and unlocked.
- Press the UNLOCK button on any transmitter that has been programmed into the remote entry receiver module.
Do any doors unlock?
Yes | No |
REPLACE remote entry receiver module. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | End of test. Remote entry system is OK. |
PINPOINT TEST B: ILLUMINATED ENTRY
Perform test only if instructed to do so by Pinpoint Test A (Quick Test). This pinpoint test checks:
- lock cylinder LEDs
- door handle switches
- remote entry receiver module
- Circuits 54 (LG/Y), 182 (BR/W), 53 (BK/LB), 57 (BK), 875 (BK/LB), 171 (BK/W)
- battery saver I/O
- instrument panel dimmer switch
- door jamb switches
- ignition switch input
B1 CHECK MODULE GROUND
- Disconnect module Connectors C1, C2 and C3.
- Check continuity to ground at Pin 5 Circuit 875 (BK/LB) of Connector C1, Pin 1 Circuit 57 (BK) and at Pin 15 Circuit 57 (BK) of Connector C3.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
GO to B2. | SERVICE open in Circuit 57 (BK) of Connector C3 or Circuit 875 (BK/LB) of Connector C1. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
B2 CHECK POWER TO MODULE
- Disconnect remote entry receiver module Connectors C1, C2 and C3.
- Check voltage at Pin 1 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) of Connector C1 to ground.
- Check voltage at Pin 14 Circuit 171 (BK/W) and Pin 25 Circuit 171 (BR/W) of Connector C2 to ground.
Is reading 10 volts or more?
Yes | No |
GO to B3. | CHECK and REPLACE fuse. SERVICE open or short in Circuit 54 (LG/Y) of Connector C1 or Circuit 171 (BK/W) of Connector C2. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
B3 CHECK CONTINUITY TO BATTERY SAVER INPUT
- Disconnect module Connector C2.
- Check continuity to Circuit 54 (LG/Y) at Pins 10 and 23 of Connector C2.
Is there continuity?
B4 CHECK BATTERY SAVER INPUT
- Reconnect module Connector C2.
- Measure voltage between ground and Pins 10 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) and 23 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) of Connector C2.
Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
B5 CHECK BATTERY SAVER OUTPUT
- With module Connector C2 connected, measure voltage between ground and Pins 11 Circuit 705 (LG/O) and 12 Circuit 705 (LG/O) of Connector C2.
Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
B6 CHECK IGNITION SWITCH INPUT TO MODULE
- Check voltage at Pin 6 Circuit 182 (BR/W) of Connector C1 with ignition switch at RUN and OFF positions.
Is reading 10 volts or more at RUN?
B7 CHECK DIMMER SWITCH ON
- Measure voltage between Pin 17 Circuit 706 (GY) and ground with all connectors connected and dimmer switch in the ON position (switch closed).
Is voltage greater than 10 volts?
B8 CHECK DIMMER SWITCH OFF
- With all module connectors connected, check continuity between Circuit 54 (LG/Y) and Pin 17 Circuit 706 (GY) of Connector C3 while the turn indicator switch is in the OFF position (switch open).
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
SERVICE shorted turn indicator switch and mounting plate. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | GO to B9. |
B9 CHECK LAMP OUTPUT
- Place turn indicator switch and mounting plate on with all connectors connected.
- Measure voltage between Pins 15 Circuit 57 (BK) and 19 Circuit 53 (BK/LB) of Connector C3.
Is reading 10 volts or more?
B10 CHECK FOR CONTINUITY AND SHORT
- Disconnect Connector C3 from remote entry module.
- Check for short between Pin 19 Circuit 53 (BK/LB) and Pin 1 Circuit 57 (BK) and Pin 15 Circuit 57 (BK).
- Check for continuity between Pin 19 Circuit 53 (BK/LB) and the suspect lock cylinder connector in door.
Is there continuity/no short?
B11 CHECK MODULE OUTPUT TO LOCK CYLINDER WHEN TRANSMITTER IS USED
- Reconnect Connector C3 to remote entry module.
- Attach voltmeter between Pin 19 Circuit 53 (BK/LB) and ground.
- Press UNLOCK on a preprogrammed transmitter.
Is reading 10 volts or more within 15 seconds?
B12 CHECK DOOR JAMB SWITCHES
- For each door (all others closed):
- Disconnect remote entry receiver module Connectors C2 and C3.
- Check continuity between Circuit 54 (LG/Y) and Pin 17 Circuit 706 (GY) with the door open and then closed (dimmer switch off in both steps).
Is there continuity with door(s) open and none with door(s) closed?
B13 CHECK CONTINUITY
- Remove door jamb switch.
- Disconnect remote entry receiver module Connector C3.
- Check continuity between Circuit 54 (LG/Y) and Pin 17 Circuit 706 (GY) with the door open and then closed (dimmer switch off in both steps).
Is there continuity?
B14 TURN ON INTERIOR LAMPS WITH JUMPER WIRE
- Disconnect remote entry module Connectors C2 and C3.
- Momentarily connect a jumper wire between Pin 10 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) and Pin 23 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) of Connector C2 and Pin 19 Circuit 53 (BK/LB) of Connector C3.
Do interior lamps come on?
Yes | No |
GO to B15. | SERVICE short or open in Circuit 54 (LG/Y) or Circuit 53 (BK/LB). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
B15 CHECK CONNECTORS
- Visually inspect all connectors for loose or corroded parts.
Are pins loose or corroded?
PINPOINT TEST C: POWER LOCKS
Perform test only if instructed to do so by Pinpoint Test A (Quick Test).
For further information on the power lock system, refer to Section 01-14A.
BEFORE PERFORMING ANY OF THE TESTS IN THIS SECTION, THE BATTERY MUST BE FULLY CHARGED.

NOTE: To lubricate linkage, use Multi-Purpose Grease Spray D7AZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specifications ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C106-B.
- Spray into latch opening
- It may be necessary to remove the door trim panel to lubricate the entire latch and linkage system.
- Manually cycle the lock ten times
- Check for interference around right latch and all linkages.
C1 NONE OF THE DOOR LOCKS WORK
- Check fuse No. 6 and fuse No. 8.
Are fuses OK?
C2 POWER TO MODULE
- Disconnect module Connectors C1, C2 and C3 from remote entry module.
- Check voltage between Pin 14 Circuit 171 (BK/W) and Pin 25 Circuit 171 (BK/W) of Connector C2 and ground.
- Check voltage between Pin 1 Circuit 54 (LG/Y) of Connector C1 and ground.
Are 10 or more volts available?
Yes | No |
GO to C3. | SERVICE open in Circuit 171 (BK/W) or 54 (LG/Y) or CHARGE battery. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C3 CHECK MODULE GROUNDS
- Disconnect remote entry module Connectors C3 and C1.
- Check continuity between Pin 1 Circuit 57 (BK) and Pin 15 Circuit 57 (BK) of Connector C3 and a known good ground.
- Check continuity between Pin 5 Circuit 875 (BK/LB) of Connector C1 and a known good ground.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
GO to C4. | SERVICE open in Circuit 57 (BK) of connector. |
C4 DOES FUSE OPEN WHEN SWITCH IS ACTIVATED?
- Reconnect remote entry module Connectors C3 and C1.
- Activate the lock and unlock switches.
- Check fuse 19 in the power distribution box.
Is fuse blown?
Yes | No |
CHECK for short to ground in Circuits 163 (R/O), 118 (PK/O) and 117 (PK/BK) or shorted lock actuator. SERVICE, then REPLACE fuse. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | GO to C5. |
C5 CHECK LOCK ACTUATORS
- Manually lock all doors.
- Connect a jumper wire between a known good ground and Pin 2 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) of Connector C3 with Connector C3 disconnected from the remote entry module.
- With a second jumper wire, momentarily connect together Pin 14 Circuit 171 (BK/W) and Pin 25 Circuit 171 (BK/W) of Connector C2. (Only passenger doors should unlock.)
- Momentarily jumper together Pin 14 Circuit 171 (BK/W), Pin 25 Circuit 171 (BK/W) of Connector C2 and Pin 3 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) of Connector C3. (Driver's door should now unlock.)
Do all doors unlock?
Yes | No |
GO to C6. | SERVICE Circuit 117 (PK/BK) or Circuit 118 (PK/O) Connector C3 or passenger lock motor(s) or Circuit 163 (R/O) or Circuit 117 (PK/BK) Connector C3 or driver's lock motor, Connector C3. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C6 CHECK DOOR LOCK SWITCHES
- Check for door lock switch stuck in LOCK or UNLOCK position.
NOTE: May be mechanically stuck, check door lock switch using meter.
Does door lock switch work?
C7 SHORT BETWEEN LOCK AND UNLOCK CIRCUITS
- Disconnect remote entry module Connector C3.
- Check for continuity between Pin 4 Circuit 119 (PK/Y) and Pin 5 Circuit 120 (PK/LG) of Connector C3.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
GO to C8. | SERVICE open between Circuits 119 (PK/Y) and 120 (PK/LG). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C8 CHECK LOCK SWITCHES FOR SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect remote entry module Connector C3.
- Check for short between Pin 4 Circuit 119 (PK/Y) and ground.
- Check for short between Pin 5 Circuit 120 (PK/LG) and ground.
Is a short discovered?
Yes | No |
SERVICE short to ground in Circuit 119 (PK/Y) or Circuit 120 (PK/LG). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | REPLACE remote entry module. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. GO to C9. |
C9 ONE OR MORE LOCKS DO NOT WORK
- Manually cycle the suspect lock(s) several times to check for door latch or linkage binding.
Does latch or linkage bind?

LUBRICATE lock and linkage. | GO to C10. |
C10 CHECK VOLTAGE TO ACTUATOR/DOOR LOCK SWITCH
- Remove door trim panel from door with suspect actuator.
- Check voltage between the suspect lock actuator and ground while operating power door lock switch.
Is voltage 10 volts or greater?
C11 CHECK MODULE OUTPUT
- With all connectors in place, depress lock button and measure voltage at Pin 2 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) and Pin 16 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) of Connector C3 to ground.
- Measure voltage at Pin 3 Circuit 163 (R/O), Pin 6 Circuit 118 (PK/O) and Pin 18 Circuit 118 (PK/O) of Connector C3 to ground while door lock switch is depressed.
Is reading 10 volts or more with lock button depressed?
Yes | No |
SERVICE Circuit 163 (R/O), Circuit 117 (PK/BK), Circuit 118 (PK/O), Circuit 119 (PK/Y) or Circuit 120 (PK/LG) for open or short. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | REPLACE remote entry module. GO to C13. |
C12 POWER TO ACTUATOR WITH DOOR LOCK SWITCH IN UNLOCK
- Check voltage between suspect lock actuator Circuit 118 (PK/O) and ground while pressing UNLOCK position on door lock switch.
Is voltage 10 volts or more?
Yes | No |
REPLACE suspect door lock actuator. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | SERVICE open or short in Circuit 120 (PK/LG), Circuit 119 (PK/Y), Circuit 118 (PK/O) or Circuit 117 (PK/BK). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C13 ONE OR MORE SWITCHES DO NOT WORK
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect module Connector C3.
- Remove door trim panel of door with suspect switch.
- Check continuity between Pin 4 Circuit 119 (PK/Y) of Connector C3 and lock position terminal of door lock switch (locking Circuit 119 [PK/Y]).
- Check continuity between Pin 5 Circuit 120 (PK/LG) of Connector C3 and unlock position terminal of door lock switch (unlocking Circuit 120 [PK/LG]).
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
REPLACE door lock switch. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | SERVICE open in Circuit 119 (PK/Y) or Circuit 120 (PK/LG). GO to C14. |
C14 CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT
- Check Circuit 57 (BK) for open.
Is circuit OK?
C15 LOCKS WILL ONLY LOCK OR ONLY UNLOCK
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect module Connector C3.
- Check continuity between Pin 4 Circuit 119 (PK/Y) (Pin 5 Circuit 120 [PK/LG] if doors will not unlock) of Connector C3 and ground while pressing the lock (unlock) position of one of the door lock switches.
Is there continuity?
C16 CHECK OUTPUT FROM MODULE
- With all connectors in place, check voltage between Pin 2 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) and Pin 16 Circuit 117 (PK/BK) of Connector C3 (Pin 3 Circuit 163 [R/O], Pin 6 Circuit 118 [PK/O] and Pin 18 Circuit 118 [PK/O] for unlock) and ground while pressing the LOCK (UNLOCK) position of one of the door lock switches.
Is voltage 10 volts or greater?
Yes | No |
SERVICE open or short in Circuit 117 (PK/BK) (Circuit 118 [PK/O] or Circuit 163 [R/O] for unlock). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | REPLACE remote entry module. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C17 CHECK DOOR SWITCH FUNCTION
- Check continuity between ground and Circuit 119 (PK/Y) for lock (Circuit 120 [PK/LG] for unlock) connection to door lock switch while pressing the LOCK (UNLOCK) position of door lock switch.
Is there continuity?

SERVICE door lock switch. GO to C18. | SERVICE break in Circuit 119 (PK/Y) (Circuit 120 [PK/LG] for unlock). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C18 LOCKS WORK INTERMITTENTLY
- Key OFF.
- Disconnect Connectors C3 and C1.
- Check continuity to ground at Pin 1 Circuit 57 (BK) and Pin 15 Circuit 57 (BK) of Connector C3 and Pin 5 Circuit 875 (BK/LB) of Connector C1.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
CHECK and SERVICE loose connections. GO to C19. | SERVICE Circuit 57 (BK) or Circuit 875 (BK/LB). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
C19 LOCKS DO NOT WORK IN FREEZING WEATHER
- Bring vehicle into heated garage to thaw.
- Lubricate locks as described at the beginning of this test.
Do locks operate?
C20 LOCKS ONLY WORK WITH ENGINE RUNNING
- Double-check the following:
- Battery fully charged.
- Loose or corroded connections to actuators, switches and remote entry receiver module connectors.
Do components operate properly?
Yes | No |
SERVICE complete. Vehicle checks OK. | GO to Pinpoint Test A to check for other concerns. |
PINPOINT TEST D: REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM
Perform test only if instructed to do so by Pinpoint Test A.

- Make sure antenna has been installed properly.
Is antenna properly installed?

D2 CHECK ANTENNA/POOR RANGE
- Disconnect antenna from the module's antenna plug, Connector C4.
- Inspect antenna jack for damage, especially to the center pin.
- Reconnect antenna (make sure jack is fully seated into module's antenna plug).
Is antenna OK?
D3 TRY ANOTHER TRANSMITTER
- If more than one transmitter is available, test the response of all transmitters for the vehicle.
- If no other transmitters are available, go to Step D14.
Do other transmitters operate properly?

GO to D4. | REPLACE damaged/worn transmitter. GO to D17. |
D4 CHECK FOR INOPERATIVE SHORTING PLUG (C4)
- Disconnect Connector C1 from remote entry receiver module.
- Measure continuity between Pin 1, C4 and Pin 2, C4.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
REPLACE Connector C4. | GO to D5. |
D5 CHECK FOR SHORTING PLUG/TRANSMITTER PROGRAM MODE
- Check that shorting plug is not inserted into Connector C4.
Is shorting plug in Connector C4?
D6 CHECK PROGRAM "A" SHORT TO GROUND
- Disconnect module Connector C1.
- Test for continuity between Pin 1 of Connector C4 and ground.
Is there continuity?
D7 CHECK PROGRAM "A" SHORT TO BATTERY
- Test for continuity between Pin 1 of Connector C4 and battery (module Connector C1 disconnected).
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
SERVICE short to battery in Circuit 808 (W/Y). REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. | GO to D8. |
D8 CHECK PROGRAM "B" SHORT TO GROUND
- Test for continuity between Pin 2 of Connector C4 and ground (module Connector C1 disconnected).
Is there continuity?

D9 CHECK PROGRAM "B" SHORT TO BATTERY
- Test for continuity between Pin 2 of Connector C4 and battery (module Connector C1 disconnected).
Is there continuity?
D10 CHECK MODULE PROGRAM "A" INPUT
- Disconnect module Connector C1.
- Measure the voltage between Pin 15 Circuit 808 (W/Y) of Connector C1 and ground.
Is voltage between 4 and 6 volts?
D11 CHECK MODULE PROGRAM "B" INPUT
- Disconnect module Connector C1.
- Measure the continuity between Pin 10 Circuit 809 (GY/Y) of Connector C1 and ground.
Is there continuity?
D12 CHECK CONTINUITY OF PROGRAM "A" CIRCUIT
- Reconnect module Connector C1.
- Measure the voltage between Pin 1 of Connector C4 and ground.
Is voltage between 4 and 6 volts?
D13 CHECK CONTINUITY OF PROGRAM "B" CIRCUIT
- Reconnect module Connector C1.
- Measure the continuity between Pin 2 of Connector C4 and ground.
Is there continuity?
D14 REPROGRAM TRANSMITTER
- Key to RUN.
- Insert a shorting plug into program Connector C4 (located behind glove compartment, taped to the harness).
- This shorting plug connects Program A input to Program B on the remote entry receiver module.
Do doors lock and unlock?
Yes | No |
GO to D15. | GO to D5. |
D15 STORE TRANSMITTER(S) INTO MODULE MEMORY
For each transmitter stored, do all doors lock then unlock?
Yes | No |
GO to D16. | GO to D2. If Step D2 has already been performed, REPLACE transmitter batteries and REPEAT Step D14. If still no response, REPLACE remote entry receiver module. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
D16 EXIT TRANSMITTER PROGRAM MODE
- Key off.
- Check that shorting plug has been removed from program Connector C4.
Do doors lock and unlock?

- Turn on the parking lamps with the lamp switch located on instrument panel.
Do parking lamps turn on with switch?
E3 CHECK PARKING LAMP OUTPUT CIRCUIT CONTINUITY
- Disconnect module Connector C2.
- Test for continuity between Pin 24 Circuit 14 (BR) of Connector C2 and Connectors C1031, C1032, C1052, C1053, C1054, C1055, C431 and C432.
Is there continuity?
E4 CHECK PARKING LAMP INPUT CIRCUIT CONTINUITY
- Disconnect module Connector C2.
- Test for continuity between Pin 13 Circuit 195 (T/W) and the output side of fuse 4.
Is there continuity?
E5 CHECK PARKING LAMPS
- Check the parking lamps. Refer to Group 17.
Do parking lamps check OK?
E6 CHECK OUTPUT CIRCUIT BREAKER
- Examine fuse 4 in fuse panel.
Is fuse OK?
E7 CHECK LAMP SWITCH ON INSTRUMENT PANEL
- Disconnect the lamp switch and remote entry receiver module Connector C1.
Do the parking lamps shut off?
E8 HORN ALWAYS ON
- Press the horn switch located on steering wheel.
Does horn stop when switch is not depressed?
Yes | No |
GO to E9. | GO to E12. |
E9 ACTIVATE HORN WITH HORN BLOW SWITCH
- Press thehorn blow switch located on the steering wheel.
Does horn sound when activated?
E10 CHECK HORN CIRCUIT CONTINUITY
- Disconnect module Connector C1.
- Test for continuity between Pin 26 of Connector C1 and Circuit 6 (the horn relay).
Is there continuity?
E11 CHECK HORN AND HORN RELAY
Do horn and horn relay work?
E12 CHECK OUTPUT CIRCUIT BREAKER
- Examine fuse 8 in fuse panel.
Is fuse OK?
Yes | No |
GO to E13. | REPLACE fuse or SERVICE open or short in Circuit 6. REPEAT Pinpoint Test A. |
E13 CHECK FOR DAMAGED/WORN MODULE
- Disconnect module Connector C1.
Does the horn shut off?
E14 CHECK HORN BLOW SWITCH ON STEERING WHEEL
- Disconnect the horn blow switch and module Connector C2.
Does the horn shut off?
