DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Symptom Charts

Use the symptom chart as an aid in determining possible conditions, sources and necessary service actions for shift control linkage.
SHIFT CONTROL LINKAGE
ConditionPossible SourceAction
  • Brake Shift Interlock System Does Not Release or Lock Properly
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Blown fuse.
  • Damaged brake on/off (BOO) switch.
  • Damaged brake shift lock actuator.
  • Shift Control Linkage Binding, Out of Proper Gear Relationship
  • Damaged ignition/shifter interlock cable.
  • Loose ignition/shifter interlock cable.
  • Loose retainer bracket.
  • Shift linkage misadjusted.
  • Transmission Control Switch (TCS) and Indicator Lamp Not Operating Properly
  • Damaged control switch.
  • Circuitry open/shorted.
  • Blown fuse.
  • Burned-out miniature bulb.
  • Damaged powertrain control module.
  • Damaged transmission control module.
BRAKE-SHIFT INTERLOCK SWITCH
ConditionPossible SourceAction
  • Cannot Shift from Park with Brake Depressed
  • No voltage signal from brake circuit.
  • CHECK voltage at wire terminal. If no voltage when brake is depressed, REPAIR circuit.

  • Large voltage difference between brake/ignition circuit.
  • MEASURE the voltage difference between ignition input and brake input — not to exceed 2 volts. REPAIR circuit.

  • Broken/seized solenoid.
  • INSPECT latch assembly and plunger. LUBRICATE or REPLACE.

  • Solenoid electrically worn or damaged.
  • REPLACE solenoid.
  • Can Shift from Park Without Depressing Brake
  • No power to solenoid.
  • CHECK solenoid wire terminals for power in ignition circuit and proper ground.

  • Broken/seized solenoid.
  • INSPECT latch assembly and plunger. LUBRICATE or REPLACE.

  • Solenoid electrically worn or damaged.
  • REPLACE solenoid.
