Section 06-00: Brake System, Service | 1996 F-150, F-250, F-350, F-Super Duty Chassis Cab, Motorhome Chassis and Bronco Workshop Manual |
Front
Inspect the disc brake caliper (2B120) and mounting for loose or damaged parts. Make sure the disc brake caliper bracket bolts are tightened to 30-36 Nm (23-26 lb-ft) for F-150 and Bronco, 170-230 Nm (126-169 lb-ft) for F-250, F-350 and F-Super Duty.
Check the front brake hose (2078) and front disc brake caliper fitting for leaks or damage.
Check the disc brake caliper closely for wet areas that might indicate a leaking seal.
Measure front disc brake rotor thickness, parallelism and runout carefully. Refer to Brake Rotor, Disc, in the Adjustments portion of this section.
Resurface, recondition or replace the front disc brake rotor (1125). A visual inspection will not determine the required service unless the damage is obvious.
Check for brake fluid contamination when inspecting the brake shoes and linings. This may indicate a leaking piston seal assembly. If a seal is leaking, the disc brake caliper must be disassembled and inspected. Refer to Section 06-03 or Section 06-04.
Check for even wear from side-to-side. If the set of brake shoes and linings on one side of the vehicle is excessively worn, the piston may be seized in the bore. If a seized piston is suspected, the disc brake caliper must be disassembled and inspected. Refer to Section 06-03 or Section 06-04.
Rear
Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Section 04-04.
Inspect the rear disc brake calipers for signs of brake fluid leakage which may indicate leaking seals.
Clean away any debris that may damage brake system parts.
Inspect rear brake shoe and lining (2200) for uneven wear. If any rear brake shoe and lining requires replacement, replace the whole axle set.
Inspect rear brake hoses for cracking, leaking, abrasion or other damage. Repair or replace as necessary.
