DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Main Components and Functions

Torque Converter

The torque converter (7902) couples the engine to the planetary geartrain. It also functions as a torque multiplication unit. The torque converter consists of the following parts:

Geartrain

The geartrain consists of the following components:

These components moved into different positions by hydraulic systems provide the transmission with its different gear ratios.

Planetary Gearset

The planetary gearset consists of forward and reverse planet assembly, pinion gear carriers and pinion gears. The members are driven to produce three forward gears plus one reverse gear.

Input Shaft

The input shaft (7017) transfers motion and torque from the converter turbine to the geartrain. This shaft is splined to the turbine on one end and to the forward clutch cylinder and stub shaft on the rearward end.

Output Shaft

The output shaft (7060) provides a torque to the driveshaft and rear axle assembly. It is driven by the output shaft ring gear hub and forward carrier.

Hydraulic System

Pump

The pump assembly provides a constant supply of fluid under pressure to operate, lubricate and cool the transmission.

Main Control

The main control valve body (7A100) directs fluid under pressure to the torque converter, band servo, clutches and governor to control the transmission's operation.
