REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Brake Backing Plate

Removal

  1. On F-150, F-250 and Bronco, remove the wheel (1007) and brake drum (1126). Disconnect the rear brake tube (2267) from the rear wheel cylinder (2261) and submerge the end of the rear brake tube in a can containing a small amount of brake fluid to prevent air from entering the system.

  1. If the brake backing plate (2211) is being removed from a Ford 8.8-inch ring gear axle on an F-150 or Bronco, refer to Section 05-02G. For Ford semi-float rear axle on F-250, refer to Section 05-02A.

  1. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings (2200) and rear wheel cylinder.

  1. Disconnect the parking brake lever (2A637) from the cable.

  1. Remove the C-clip in the differential case which holds the axle shaft in place. After the C-clip has been removed, slide the axle shaft out of the housing.

  1. For brake backing plate removal procedures from a full-float rear axle for F-250 HD and F-350, refer to Section 05-02B.

  1. Remove the brake backing plate after the axle shaft and hub have been removed.

Installation

  1. Position the brake backing plate on the retaining bolts in the axle housing flange.

  1. Insert the axle shaft assembly into the housing so the splines engage the differential side gear, with the bearing retainer sliding onto the retaining bolts and against the brake backing plate.

  1. Install the retaining nuts through the access hole in the axle shaft flange.

  1. Install the brake backing plate, hub and axle shafts. On F-150 or Bronco with Ford 8.8-inch ring gear axle, refer to Section 05-02G in the Powertrain, Drivetrain Service Manual. On F-250 with Ford semi-float rear axle, refer to Section 05-02A. On F-250 HD and F-350 with full-float rear axle, refer to Section 05-02B.

  1. Install the rear wheel cylinder and rear brake shoes and linings. On rear brakes, connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.

  1. Connect the rear brake tube to the rear wheel cylinder and install the brake drum and wheel. Adjust the rear brake shoes and linings and bleed air from the system as described in Section 06-06.

  1. Tighten the wheels to the specification listed in the Wheel Torque Specifications chart at the end of this section.
