DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Pinpoint Tests
PINPOINT TEST A: BRAKE SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM DOES NOT RELEASE OR LOCK PROPERLY
A1 CHECK POWER SUPPLY TO BRAKE SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR
- Turn key to run.
- Using a test lamp connected to a known good ground, check Circuit 296 (W/P) at Fuse 10 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) at Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty.
Did test lamp illuminate?
A2 CHECK FUSE 10 (10A)/7 (15A) SUPPLY
- Remove Fuse 10 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty.
- Using test lamp, check power supply to Fuse 10 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) at Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty.
Did test lamp illuminate?

| GO to A3. | SERVICE Circuit 296 (W/P) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A3 CHECK POWER SUPPLY AT BRAKE SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR
- Gain access to brake shift lock actuator. Refer to Transmission Shift Cable and Bracket in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
- Using test lamp, check power supply at brake shift lock actuator connector Circuit 296 (W/P) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty.
Did test lamp illuminate?
| Yes | No |
| GO to A4. | SERVICE Circuit 296 (W/P) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A4 CHECK BRAKE ON/OFF (BOO) SWITCH POWER TO BRAKE SHIFT LOCK ACTUATOR
- Press brake pedal and hold.
- Using test lamp, check for voltage at Circuit 511 (LG) at brake shift lock actuator connector.
Did test lamp illuminate?
| Yes | No |
| GO to A9. | GO to A5. LEAVE brake pedal pressed. |
A5 CHECK POWER AT BRAKE ON/OFF (BOO) SWITCH
- Using test lamp, check Circuit 511 (LG) for voltage.
Did test lamp illuminate?
| Yes | No |
| SERVICE Circuit 511 (LG) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A6. |
A6 CHECK FOR SUPPLY TO BRAKE ON/OFF (BOO) SWITCH
- Using test lamp, check for voltage at Circuit 10 (LG/R) at (BOO) switch.
Did test lamp illuminate?
| Yes | No |
| REPLACE damaged brake ON/OFF (BOO) switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A7. |
A7 CHECK FUSE 13 (15A)/9 (15A) OUTPUT
- Using test lamp, check output side of Fuse 13 Circuit 10 (LG/R) for voltage for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 9 Circuit 10 (LG/R) for F-Super Duty.
Did test lamp illuminate?

| SERVICE Circuit 10 (LG/R) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 9 Circuit 10 (LG/R) for F-Super Duty for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A8. |
A8 CHECK CIRCUIT 10 (LG/R)
- Remove Fuse 13 (15A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 9 (15A) for F-Super Duty.
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to Circuit 10 (LG/R) at Fuse 13 for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 10 (LG/R) at Fuse 9 for F-Super Duty. Measure resistance.
Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
| Yes | No |
| SERVICE Circuit 10 (LG/R) or Circuit 383 (R/W) for F-Series except F-Super Duty for a short to ground. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE damaged Fuse 13 (15A). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A9 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK)
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to Circuit 57 (BK). Measure resistance.
Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
| Yes | No |
| REPLACE damaged brake shift lock actuator. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE Circuit 57 (BK) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST B: SHIFT CONTROL LINKAGE BINDING, OUT OF PROPER GEAR RELATIONSHIP
B1 CHECK SHIFT CONTROL LINKAGE
- Gain access to shift control linkage. Refer to Transmission Shift Cable and Bracket in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
- Actuate shift linkage in all ranges.
- Observe all linkage during operation.
Is linkage damaged?
| Yes | No |
| REPLACE shift control linkage. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to B2. |
B2 CHECK SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
- Check transmission shift cable and bracket installation and tightness.
Is shift cable and bracket properly installed?
B3 CHECK LINKAGE/CABLE FOR PROPER GEAR RELATIONSHIP
- Actuate shifter in all ranges.
Does indicator match gear selection?

| SERVICE is complete. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE damaged linkage/cable. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST C:TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) AND INDICATOR LAMP NOT OPERATING PROPERLY
C1 CHECK SUPPLY TO TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS)
- Key to run.
- Using a test lamp connected to a known good ground, check for voltage at output side of Fuse 17 (10A) Circuit 640 (R/Y) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty.
Did test lamp illuminate?
C2 CHECK FUSE 17 (10A)/7 (15A)
- Remove Fuse 17 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty.
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to output side of Fuse 17 (10A) cavity for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) cavity for F-Super Duty.
- Measure resistance.
Is resistance 5 ohms or less?

| SERVICE Circuit 640 (R/Y) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty for short to ground. REPLACE Fuse 17 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE damaged Fuse 17 (10A) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Fuse 7 (15A) for F-Super Duty. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C3 CHECK SUPPLY VOLTAGE AT TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS)
- Using a test lamp, check Circuit 640 (R/Y) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty at transmission control switch (TCS) for voltage.
Did test lamp illuminate?

| GO to C4. | SERVICE Circuit 640 (R/Y) for F-Series except F-Super Duty or Circuit 298 (P/O) for F-Super Duty for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C4 CHECK TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS)
- Actuate the transmission control switch (TCS).
- Using a test lamp, check for voltage at Circuit 224 (T/W) at transmission control switch (TCS).
Did test lamp illuminate?
| Yes | No |
| GO to C5. | REPLACE damaged transmission control switch (TCS). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C5 CHECK TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH (TCS) INPUT TO POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Gain access to the powertrain control module.
- Using a test lamp, check for voltage at Circuit 224 (T/W) at PCM connector.
Did test lamp illuminate?

| GO to C6. | SERVICE Circuit 224 (T/W) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C6 CHECK POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE OUTPUT TO TRANSMISSION CONTROL INDICATOR LAMP
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, carefully back-probe Circuit 911 (W/LG) at PCM connector.
- Measure resistance.
Is resistance 5 ohms or less?
| Yes | No |
| System OK. | REPLACE damaged powertrain control module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
