DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Pinpoint Tests — Sound System Function
PINPOINT TEST A: RADIO CHASSIS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY
A1 CHECK OPERATION OF RADIO CHASSIS
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
- Press radio POWER on.
Is radio chassis display lit?
A2 CHECK QUALITY SOUND FROM RADIO SPEAKERS
- Verify that quality sound is coming from radio speakers.
Is quality sound coming from radio speakers?
A3 DISPLAY TEST — AM BAND INDICATOR
- Press AM/FM button for AM band.
- Press TUNE button to station 1000 AM.
Is display correct and is AM indicator lit?
Yes | No |
GO to A4. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A4 DISPLAY TEST — FM1/FM2 BAND INDICATORS
- Press AM/FM button FM1 band.
- Press TUNE button to station 88.9 FM.
- Verify for FM2 band.
Is display correct and are FM1 and FM2 indicators lighting respectively?
Yes | No |
GO to A5. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A5 DISPLAY TEST — ST STEREO INDICATOR
- Press SEEK or TUNE buttons to a local FM stereo station.
Is display correct and is ST indicator lit?
Yes | No |
GO to A6. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A6 SEEK — HIGHER FREQUENCY STATION
- Press SEEK (>) and verify that number on display increases.
NOTE: If display reads 1610 AM or 107.9 FM, display will not increase. The SEEK (>) button should be pressed until display reads less than 1610 AM or 107.9 FM.
Is SEEK (>) operating properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A7. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A7 SEEK — LOWER FREQUENCY STATION
- Press SEEK (<) and verify that number on display decreases.
NOTE: If display reads 530 AM or 88.1 FM, display will not decrease. The SEEK (<) button should be pressed until display reads greater than 530 AM or 88.1 FM.
Is SEEK (<) operating properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A8. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A8 STATION RECALL MEMORY TEST
- Press SEEK or TUNE buttons to a desired station.
- Press and hold one of the (1 through 5) memory buttons for two seconds until station sound is returned (repeat for all five buttons).
- Do for AM, FM1 and FM2 bands using 15 stations.
- Turn radio chassis off, then on.
- Press each station recall button and verify memory storage.
Is memory test successful?
Yes | No |
GO to A9. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A9 VOLUME CONTROL TEST
- Press VOLUME (+) and (-) to verify an increase and decrease in volume sound from radio chassis.
Does volume change properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A10. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. REPEAT volume test. If volume still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A10 TUNE CONTROL TEST (ESR)
- Press TUNE button (>) or (<) to change the frequency station up or down one increment at a time. Change frequencies quickly by holding the (>) or (<) side of button. Verify for all bands.
Does TUNE operate properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A11. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A11 TUNE ANTENNA TEST (OPTIONAL)
- Tune radio on AM band outside of building.
- Press SEEK to observe all listenable stations on band. Count number that can be tuned.
- Compare to a vehicle with known good radio chassis.
Are normal number of stations received?
Yes | No |
GO to A12. | If an absolute number of stations cannot be tuned, PERFORM radio antenna component test. REFER to Components Tests in this section. If antenna operative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A12 CLOCK — CONTROL TEST
- Press CLOCK button and simultaneously press SEEK (>) to advance hours or SEEK (<) to advance minutes. Release CLOCK button.
Does CLOCK operate properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A13. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A13 TONE CONTROL TEST
- BASS: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until BASS is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to increase low frequency sounds and VOLUME (-) to decrease low frequency sounds.
- TREBLE: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until TREB is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to increase high frequency sounds and VOLUME (-) to decrease high frequency sounds.
- Verify proper display and sounds for each tone control.
Do BASS and TREBLE operate properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A14. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If BASS and/or TREBLE still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A14 BALANCE CONTROL TEST
- BALANCE: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until BAL is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to shift sound to right radio speakers and VOLUME (-) to shift sound to left radio speakers.
- Verify proper display and sound in proper radio speakers.
Does BALANCE operate properly?
Yes | No |
GO to A15. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If BALANCE still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A15 FADER CONTROL TEST
- FADER: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until FADE is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to shift sound to rear radio speakers and VOLUME (-) to shift sound to front radio speakers.
Does FADER operate properly?
Yes | No |
REFER to symptom chart to determine if an inoperative condition exists. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If FADER still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A16 CHECK INOPERATIVE OR INTERMITTENT
- Verify if condition is intermittent or inoperative.
Is condition intermittent?
A17 CHECK FUSE
- Key off.
- Check fuse 11 (15A) in instrument panel fuse panel.
- Check fuse 17 (50A) in power distribution box.
Are fuses open?

REMOVE open fuse and GO to A18. | GO to A19. |
A18 CHECK FOR GROUNDED POWER FEED
- Key off, check Circuit 137 (Y/BK) at radio chassis connector C1 for a short to ground.
Is power feed grounded?
Yes | No |
LOCATE short to ground and REPLACE or SERVICE. REPLACE fuse(s). RETEST system. | REPLACE fuse and RETEST system. If fuse still opens, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
A19 CHECK POWER FEED
- Connect digital volt-ohmmeter between radio chassis connector C1 Circuit 137 (Y/BK) and known good ground.
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
Does digital volt-ohmmeter indicate 10 volts or more?
A20 CHECK WIRING CONTINUITY — FUSE TO RADIO
- Remove fuse 17 (50A) temporarily.
- Check continuity between fuse 17 output cavity and radio chassis connector C1 Circuit 137 (Y/BK).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
GO to A21. | SERVICE wiring as required. RETEST system. |
A21 CHECK WIRING CONTINUITY — FUSE TO IGNITION SWITCH
- Check continuity between fuse 11 (15A) input cavity and ignition switch Circuit 297 (BK/LG).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
RECONNECT fuse and GO to A22. | SERVICE wiring as required. RETEST system. |
A22 CHECK IGNITION SWITCH POWER
- Connect digital volt-ohmmeter between ignition switch connector Circuit 297 (BK/LG).
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
Does digital volt-ohmmeter indicate 10 volts or more?
Yes | No |
REMOVE radio chassis for service. | SERVICE ignition switch, fuse P (50A), or Circuit 37 (Y) for open. REFER to Section 14-00. |
A23 CHECK RADIO SPEAKERS
- With radio chassis operating, check if condition is on all radio speakers.
Is condition present on all radio speakers?
A24 CHECK RADIO ANTENNA
- Check radio antenna, cable connections and wiring.
Is antenna system operating properly?

A25 CHECK RADIO CHASSIS
- Substitute known good radio speakers to radio chassis.
- Verify if condition is in radio speaker or radio chassis operation.

PINPOINT TEST B: RADIO CHASSIS DISPLAY BLANK — RADIO CHASSIS OPERATES
B1 CHECK OPERATION OF RADIO CHASSIS
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
- Press radio POWER on.
Isradio chassis display lit?
B2 CHECK QUALITY SOUND FROM RADIO SPEAKERS
- Verify that quality sound is coming from radio speakers.
Is quality sound coming from radio speakers?
Yes | No |
DISCONNECT fuse 11 (15A) and GO to B3. | GO to A1. |
B3 CHECK WIRING CONNECTIONS
- Check wiring connectors and wires for damage, corrosion or open wire at radio chassis connector C1 Pin 6, Circuit 137 (Y/BK).
Are wires and connections OK?
Yes | No |
RECONNECT fuse and GO to B4. | SERVICE harness, connector and wiring as required. RETEST system. |
B4 CHECK LCD SUPPLY
- Connect digital volt-ohmmeter between radio chassis connector C1 Circuit 484 (O/BK) and known good ground.
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
- Measure voltage at Circuit 484 (O/BK).
Does digital volt-ohmmeter indicate 10 volts or more?
Yes | No |
REMOVEradio chassis for service. LCD display is internally inoperative. | GO to B5. |
B5 CHECK FUSE
- Key off.
- Check fuse 10 (4A) in instrument panel fuse panel.
Is fuse open?
B6 CHECK FOR GROUNDED ILLUMINATION FEED
- Turn radio chassis off.
- Disconnect radio chassis connector C1.
- Check Circuit 19 (LB/R) for continuity to known good ground.
- Check Circuit 294 (W/LB) for continuity to known good ground.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
LOCATE short to ground and SERVICE. REPLACE fuse. RETEST system. | REPLACE fuse. OPERATE. If fuse still opens, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
B7 CHECK WIRING — FUSE 4 (15A)
- Check continuity between fuse 4 (15A) output cavity and IP fuse 10 (4A) input cavity Circuit 294 (W/LB).
- Check Circuit 19 (LB/R) for continuity from fuse 10 (4A) output cavity to Pin 5 of radio chassis connector C1.
Is continuity present?

C4 DISPLAY TEST — FM1/FM2 BAND INDICATORS
- Press AM/FM button FM1 band.

C6 SEEK — HIGHER FREQUENCY STATION

C7 SEEK — LOWER FREQUENCY STATION
- Press SEEK (<) and verify that number on display decreases.
NOTE: If display reads 530 AM or 87.7 FM, display will not decrease. The SEEK (<) button should be pressed until display reads greater than 530 AM or 87.7 FM.
Is SEEK (<) operating properly?

GO to C8. | REMOVE radio chassis for service. |

- Press AUTO PRESET button for three seconds.
- Verify that radio chassis automatically presets strong stations sequentially on all memory recall buttons.
- Turn off radio chassis, then turn back on.
- Verify the same stations are in memory for all buttons.

C15 TONE CONTROL TEST
- BASS: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until BASS is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to increase low frequency sounds and VOLUME (-) to decrease low frequency sounds.
- TREBLE: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until TREB is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to increase high frequency sounds and VOLUME (-) to decrease high frequency sounds.
- Verify proper display and sounds for each tone control.
Do BASS and TREBLE operate properly?

GO to C16. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If BASS and/or TREBLE still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
C16 BALANCE CONTROL TEST
- BALANCE: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until BAL is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to shift sound to right radio speakers and VOLUME (-) to shift sound to left radio speakers.
- Verify proper display and sound in proper radio speakers.

C17 FADER CONTROL TEST
- FADER: Press AUDIO button repeatedly until FADE is displayed. Press VOLUME (+) to shift sound to rear radio speakers and VOLUME (-) to shift sound to front radio speakers.
- Verify proper display and sound in proper radio speakers.
Does FADER operate properly?

GO to C18. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If FADER still inoperative, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
C18 TAPE PLAYER — LOADING TEST
- With radio chassis POWER on and key to RUN or ACCESSORY, insert known good cassette into tape player opening (with open edge of tape to the right).
NOTE: If tape is at the end, playing will start on reverse side of tape.
- Display will indicate arrows for ESC.
Do loading of tape and display operate properly?

C19 TAPE PLAYER — REV/FF TEST (ESC)
- Press the left side of REV/FF button to rewind tape playing forward. Return to tape play by pressing right side of button.
- Press the right side of REV/FF button to fast-forward tape playing forward. Return to play by pressing left side of button.
- Pressing both sides of REV/FF button simultaneously will reverse tape to opposite side (track) of tape.
Do REV/FF operate properly?

C20 TAPE PLAYER — DOLBY TEST
- (ESC) Press memory button (3) to select Dolby® Noise Reduction. Verify quality of sound.
- Eject tape and verify Dolby® for Dynamic Noise Reduction on an FM stereo station. Verify sound.
Does DOLBY operate properly?

C21 TAPE PLAYER — EJECT TEST (ESC)

C22 TAPE PLAYER — RADIO SPEAKER CONTROL TEST
- Adjust AUDIO button for BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE and FADER respectively, operating the VOLUME (+) and (-) for all conditions.
- Adjust VOLUME in both conditions to verify loudness.
Do all radio speaker controls operate properly?
Yes | No |
REFER to Symptom Chart to determine if an inoperative condition exists. | CHECK radio speakers and connections. REFER to Symptom Chart if diagnosis finds radio speakers inoperative. If radio speaker controls inoperative in radio chassis, GO to C23. |
C23 CHECK INOPERATIVE OR INTERMITTENT
- Verify if condition is intermittent or inoperative.

C24 CHECK FUSE
- Key off.
- Check fuse 11 (15A) in instrument panel fuse panel.
- Check fuse 17 (50A) in power distribution box.
Is either fuse open?

C25 CHECK FOR GROUNDED POWER FEED
- With key off, check fuse 11 (15A), Circuit 137(Y/BK) at radio chassis connector C1 for a short to ground.
- Check fuse 17 (50A), Circuit 37 (Y).
Is power feed grounded?
Yes | No |
LOCATE short to ground and REPLACE or SERVICE. REPLACE fuse(s). RETEST system. | REPLACE fuse and RETEST system. If fuse still opens, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
C26 CHECK POWER FEED
- Connect digital volt-ohmmeter between radio chassis connector C1, Pin 6 Circuit 137 (Y/BK) and a known good ground.
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
Does digital volt-ohmmeter indicate 10 volts or more?
C27 CHECK WIRING CONTINUITY — FUSE 17 (50A)
- Remove fuse 17 (50A) temporarily.
- Check continuity between fuse 17 (50A) and radio chassis connector C1, Pin 6 Circuit 137 (Y/BK).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
GO to C28. | SERVICE wiring or ignition switch for open. RETEST system. |
C28 CHECK RADIO SPEAKERS
- With radio chassis operating, check if condition is on all radio speakers.
Is condition present on all radio speakers?
C29 CHECK RADIO ANTENNA
- Check antenna, radio antenna lead in cable and wiring.
Is antenna system operating properly?

D3 CHECK WIRING CONNECTIONS
- Check wiring connectors and wires for damage, corrosion or open wire at radio chassis connector C1 Circuit 137 (Y/BK) or Circuit 484 (O/BK) and Circuit 19 (LB/R).

D4 CHECK LCD SUPPLY

- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.

D5 CHECK FUSE
- Key off.
- Check fuse 11 (15A) in instrument panel fuse panel. Check fuse 17 (50A) in power distribution box.
Is either fuse open?
D6 CHECK FOR GROUNDED LCD FEED
- Turn radio chassis off.
- Check fuse 11 (15A) Circuit 137 (Y/BK) for continuity to known good ground.
- Check Circuit 484 (O/BK) for continuity to known good ground.
- Check Circuit 297 (BK/LG) at ignition switch for continuity to known good ground.
- Check Circuit 37 (Y) between IP fuse panel and power distribution box for continuity to known good ground.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
SERVICE Circuit 137 (Y/BK), Circuit 484 (O/BK), Circuit 297 (BK/LG), Circuit 37 (Y), headlamp switch, or ignition switch for short to ground. REPLACE fuse. RETEST system. | REPLACE fuse. OPERATE. If fuse still opens, REMOVE radio chassis for service. |
D7 CHECK WIRING — FUSE 17 (50A)
- Check continuity between fuse 17 (50A) and radio chassis connector C1 Circuit 484 (O/BK).
Is continuity present?

PINPOINT TEST E: COMPACT DISC RADIO INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE PROPERLY
E1 CHECK OPERATION OF COMPACT DISC RADIO
- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
- Press radio POWER on.
- Verify radio chassis operates properly. (Refer to Pinpoint Test C.)
- Handling test disc by its edge (label-side up), insert into compact disc radio. Verify powerloading.
Is compact disc radio display lit?
E2 CHECK QUALITY SOUND FROM RADIO SPEAKERS
- Verify that quality sound is coming from radio speakers.
Is quality sound coming from radio speakers?
E3 COMPACT DISC RADIO — PLAY/STOP TEST
- STOP: Press PLAY/STOP button and verify disc stops playing, stop indicator illuminates and operation returns to radio or tape mode.

- Key to RUN or ACCESSORY.
- Press radio chassis POWER on.
- Verify radio chassis operates properly. (Refer to Pinpoint Test C.)
- Handling test disc by its edge (label-side up), insert into compact disc radio. Verify powerloading.
Is compact disc radio display lit?

F5 CHECK RADIO CHASSIS DISPLAY
- Verify that radio chassis display is lit with power on.

F6 CHECK WIRING — MEMORY FUSE 1 (20A)
- Check continuity between memory fuse 1 (20A) in power distribution box and compact disc radio chassis connector C1 Pin 8, Circuit 797 (LG/P).

G1 TAPE PLAYER LOADING TEST (ESC)
- With radio chassis POWER on and key to RUN or ACCESSORY, insert known good cassette into tape player opening (with open edge of tape to the right). Verify automatic powerloading (tape player draws tape in and begins playing tape).
NOTE: If tape is at the end, playing will start on reverse side of tape.
- Display will indicate arrows.

- Press AMS button. AMS will be displayed.

G3 TAPE PLAYER REV/FF TEST (ESC)
- Press the left side of REV/FF button to rewind tape playing forward. Return to tape play by pressing right side of button.
- Press the right side of REV/FF button to fast-forward tape playing forward. Return to play by pressing left side of button.
- Pressing both sides of REV/FF button simultaneously will reverse tape to opposite side (track) of tape.
